When Remus came downstairs in the morning, Anna, Ryerson, and Klug were already gathered in the kitchen. Each of his senses was amplified, its power sharpened: the sizzle of batter on a griddle; the scent of percolating coffee; his sister’s odd behavior, her quick but stilted movements and the grim set of her lips. The newspapers were waiting for him. He scanned the front page headlines of the Enquirer. Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig led the Yankees to a win over the Pirates in the first game of the World Series. A German “alien” was accused of having plotted to kill former President Woodrow Wilson during the World War. Luella Melius, a prima donna of the Chicago opera company, shared her dismay at the behavior of “bobbed-hair passengers” on an ocean liner: “I thought I knew something about the art of attracting men, but I am a novice.”

Anna set a plate of pancakes in front of Remus.

“Good morning, Anna,” Remus said. “How are you this morning?”

“Fine,” she told him. “Well, this is going to be your big day.”

“Yes, Anna.”

They ate in silence, the only sound the scraping of forks and their dry, audible swallows. Anna looked only at her meal, as though the mere sight of her brother might burn her eyes. Her mind hummed with disquieting thoughts and fearful premonitions: She sensed that something was about to happen—either a violent act by her brother, or one against him.
